Granite Canyon Mine, Wyoming
Owner: MMM West Region (North Division)
Project Value: Confidential
Scope of Services: Mine Reclamation, 2.67 million Cubic Yards of Reclamation Work
Martin Marietta solicited proposals for the first stage of this legacy properties' reclamation. Claystone was awarded the hard bid May of 2021 and mobilized 35 machines to the project by June 1st. In continuous operation since 1937, this granite quarry provides most of the high-quality railroad ballast for the western United States and is located at 7,300 feet above sea level. A specified two-season, weather restricted project, combined a massive equipment fleet of scrapers and haul trucks, moving 35,000 CY per day, while coordinating with up to 8 (1 mile long) unit trains crossing through the middle of the project on a daily basis. With a planned winter restriction Claystone moved approximately 60% of the material in the first season, exceeding the owners expectations, and allowing a partial seeding of the cut slopes prior to the winter shutdown. The second season remobilized a similar equipment spread and finished the reclamation seeding ahead of the Wyoming DMR's schedule, allowing a reduction in the posted bond.
